Teaching at LBC has been a blessing since 2017, when I assisted with the birth of the Criminal Justice program. Having the opportunity to guide students explore the components of the criminal justice system is part of the clear calling that God has had for me to help young people and their families since my freshman year in college. Discovering as an undergrad that I had a passion for mentoring young men, particularly those at-risk, I took my first job in the criminal justice field as a detention center youth care worker in Lancaster, PA. Realizing detention center interactions were often too limited. Therefore, upon graduation, I took a position as a Lancaster County juvenile probation officer. However, dissatisfaction with caseload sizes and frequent out-of-home placements, I left “the system” and took a position as a Houseparent at Milton Hershey School, hoping to have a more consistent and long-term influence on the young people I helped. However, realizing that my passion really was in helping at-risk youth, I returned to Juvenile Probation in Lancaster. It was at that time that I focused on improving myself professionally, which eventually led to obtaining my MS in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice at Shippensburg University. After 12 years of rewarding work that included a good deal of system reform activities outside of work, I left the system once again, exploring both non-profit work as well as private enterprise. Most recently, I served as an analyst for the State of Florida’s Department of Juvenile Justice, participating in significant work to improve operations through data-informed decision making. Throughout my career, self-improvement and participating in high-functioning teams focused on helping others has been my joyful work. Teaching at LBC has been the best part of it all.
